Miss Lucy’s Playground Songs

Teacher Teacher

Posted on: February 11, 2009

I caught my husband singing this song yesterday:

Teacher teacher, floating down the Delaware
Chewing on her underwear, doesn’t have another pair
Ten days later, eaten by a polar bear
And that’s why the polar bear died.

On CocoJams Teacher Taunts I found this version – which is very similar:

Row Row Row Your Boat
Row, Row, Row your boat
Gently down the stream
Throw the teacher overboard
Listen to her scream

Five days later, floating down the Delaware
Chewing on her underwear, doesn’t have another pair
Ten days later, eaten by a polar bear
Wonder why the polar bear died.

Like the Cocojams version, on In the 80s, I found this version:

Row Row Row your boat gently down the stream
Throw your teacher overboard and listen to her scream
Five days later floatin’ down the Delaware
chewing on her underwear couldn’t afford another pair!
Ten days later bitten by a polar bear
that’s how the polar bear died!!

There was more to the version I heard as a kid:

Row, Row, Row your boat
Gently down the stream
Throw your teacher overboard
and listen to her scream

Five days later, floating down the Delaware
Chewing on her underwear, wish she had another pair

Ten days later, eaten by a polar bear
Wonder why the polar bear died.

Fifteen days later, sittin in the sewer,
eatin cow manure, watching the flies go by

Teacher teacher floating on the Delaware,
chewing on her underwear, couldn’t afford another pair.
Ten days later eaten by a polar bear.
That’s how the polar bear died.

Fifteen days later, sitting in a sewer.
eating cow manure, the RSPCA wanted to shoot her,
teacher collected, all of the bears white fur,
used it as a massive big coat……

There was more to the version I heard as a kid:

Five days later, floating down the Delaware

Ten days later, bitten by a polar bear, joy to the world the teacher’s dead we barbecued her head

What happened to her body, we flushed it down the potty, round and round and round it goes until it overflows.

coool

its teacher teacher floating by the Delaware chewing on her underwear couldn’t afford another pair ten days later eaten by a polar bear that’s how the polar bear died.

row row row your boat gently down the stream chuck your teacher over board and listen to her scream 5 days later all that can been seen is the teachers underwear floating down the steam

I always heard the verse ‘couldn’t afford another pair’ as ‘ must’ve been a dirty pair

For years I wondered if this was a real song or just something that started in my school. I attended a special education school for children with behavioral difficulties. “Bad kids” So we always made up crazy stuff.

This is how I heard the song.

“Teacher teacher floating down the Delaware, chewing on her underwear, gritting for another pair. Three days later eaten by a polar bear, and that’s how the polar bear died.”

Then you ask “How did the polar bear die?” And depending on the other persons answer you just start singing the song over again from the beginning, and keep repeating the process to be annoying lol.

Thanks for sharing all the different versions!

We sang: …push your teacher overboard and listen to her scream. 9 days later, floating down the Delaware, chewing on her underwear, wish she had another pair. 10 days later, got eaten by a crocodile and that was the end of the teacher.

In my neck of the woods, we always sang it:
“Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream,
throw your teacher overboard and listen to her scream.
Five years later, floatin’ down the Delaware,
chewin’ on her underwear, wish she had another pair,
eaten by a polar bear
and that’s how the polar bear died!”

I have no idea why our version was five years later, rather than X amount of days later, and that’s probably why we didn’t have any time lapsing between ‘chewing on her underwear’ and being eaten by a polar bear…

there goes jimmy goin down the delaware
chewin in his underwear, cant afford another pair
eight days later, bitten by a polar bear
thats how the polary bear died…

Chicago, 1960s-70s

We always sang it differently:
“Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream,
Throw your teacher overboard and listen to her scream
Five days later, s/he’s nowhere to be seen,
Except the teacher’s underwear floating down the stream.”
